Desyn
Masiello is of a rare breed of DJ. Not content with
founding one of the most respected underground promotions
companies and record labels, he is forging a reputation
as one of most talented and upfront DJs in the world.
His ear for a tune has become a hallmark; consistently
picking up on unknown tracks and turning them in to
dancefloor monsters have made his every set a true occasion.
His upfront selection has earned plaudits and praise
from the very highest levels, from Danny Tenaglia, to
Danny Howells, Deep Dish and 16b.
Desyn
has always been an innovator. Frustrated at the lack
of opportunities at the time four years ago in London
Desyn typically took matters into his own hands and
set up Symphonic Promotions and Management with DJ collaborator
'Paolo' a music promotions company dedicated solely
to their vision of twisted, funky and progressive house.
Clients from all over the World such as Alola, Disclosure,
Sunkissed, Teknology, Protea, Tonkin and Barracuda are
on the roster of this small but perfectly formed promo
company. partner Chapple Davis handles radio promotion
for many of the UK's major labels and artists (e.g.
Cevin Fisher on Subversive and Paul Van Dyk on Deviant).
The policy of less is more serving only limited numbers
of each track - served them well in building a groundswell
of respect with the industry and began to forge influential
links for Desynís burgeoning Djing career. Notable successes
of this period included being signed up by Sony to exclusively
DJ for their sponsored events, and this saw him spin
at the inaugural Creamfields, V98 music festival, and
Sony Birthday with Danny Howells - all times to rapturous
response.
An
all-round music man, Desyn set up and runs Alternative
Route Recordings Ltd and Alternative Route Studios,
a record label / studio that he owns with his partner
William Brunner (AKA PMT & Fata Morgana). Never one
to do things by halves, their first release was the
mighty 'KC Flightt vs. Funky Junction' 'Voices', charted
at No.1 by Deep Dish and played by almost every premier
league DJ. The success of this long-overlooked track
is testament to Desyn's A&R ability to unearth hot music
as is the massive 'Freedom Is' by Stefano Greppi from
Italy the label's second release and exclusively on
rotation with none other than Danny Tenaglia. Major
labels have quickly recognised this ability and Desyn
has been actively hunted for major A&R roles. However
he is content to continue setting his own impressive
agenda for the time being.
Searching
for a clubbing identity to match the success of Symphonic
and Alternative Route, he set up The Big Mojo in London
in 1999. Hitting on a previously underused Piccadilly
venue, he transformed it into one of the most talked
about club nights in London, with an intimacy and vibe
the bigger clubs could only dream of. Roping in close
friend and acclaimed producer Omid Nourizadeh (16b)
to play alongside him at the opening gig and hiring
close friend and fellow DJ Paolo, the three completed
a formidable resident trio.
Following
the success of the Mojo parties, Desyn shrewdly combined
the club's success and his arsenal of upfront tracks
to produce Mojo Grooves - a demo CD that won unprecedented
acclaim from global promoters and punters and set the
stage for his international career.
This
combination of factors has seen Desyn's reputation and
workload skyrocket. A monthly residency at London's
top tribal and progressive house night 'Elements' has
been established, and further afield he is resident
at Liekki (Tampere, Finland), Stereo (Helsinki), and
of course his own night 'The Big Mojo'. Desyn's DJ skills
are now in demand across the world and up and coming
guest spots include Renaissance (London), Double 0 (Singapore),
Limelight (NYC), Love Bomb & H20 (Warsaw) and Intensity
(Ireland) all confirmed.
The
Mojo reputation has since built up into an international
brand; with two acclaimed parties staged at the 2001
WMC in Miami. The YoshiToshi party saw a brilliant set
from Desyn and 16b, featuring one of the most upfront
and diverse set selections. Guests at the party included
Deep Dish and Danny Howells who took time to personally
congratulate Desyn for his set.
The
Mojo name is in negation with several major names in
the global clubbing scene; and looks set to go truly
international in 2001, alongside various UK tour dates
with 16b and Paolo.
For
Desyn - one of the brightest talents in the dance music
industry - the future is extremely bright.
